There are people who actually believe that Cain was born through the sexual union of Satan and Eve. They believe that when Eve ate the fruit of the tree knowledge of good and evil, she was having sex with satan. But if ‘eating the fruit’ was an act of Intercourse with Satan, then why would Adam have eaten the same Fruit that Eve ate? Let us look at what really happened.
Genesis 3:16-17 (NIV)
16 And the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.”
Note that it was the tree of the knowledge of good and evil of which they were not to partake .
Genesis 4:1-7 (NIV)
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” 2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ “
4 “You will not surely die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.
It was knowledge they partook – not sex. This knowledge, combined with the eternal life provided by the fruit of the tree of life was something God would not allow mankind to partake of. It was for this reason Adam and Eve were kicked out of the garden of Eden.
Genesis 3 (NIV)
22 And the LORD God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.” 23 So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. 24 After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.
It was only AFTER they were kicked out of the garden of Eden that Adam and Eve had sex. It was after that when Eve became pregnant with Cain. There is a logical progression which is easily seen in scripture. Let us look at the scriptures concerning Cain’s birth using various English versions.
Genesis 4:1 (NASB)
1 Now the man had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain, and she said, “I have gotten a manchild with the help of the LORD.”
Genesis 4:1 (NIV)
1 Adam lay with his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, “With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man.”
Genesis 4:1 (KJV)
1 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.
Genesis 4:1 (ESV)
1 Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, “I have gotten a man with the help of the LORD.”
In each case, the first man, Adam, had sex with his wife and she gave birth to a man-child with the help of the Lord. God got the glory – not Satan. It makes no sense to anyone who can read to believe that satan had anything to do with Cain’s birth. The best I can say about the belief that Cain was the offspring of Satan is that they are reading into scripture something that is not there, and ignoring what IS there.
Additionally, all mankind was wiped off the earth except for eight people at the time of Noah (Genesis 6-8).
1 Peter 3:20 (NIV)
20 who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water
Not only that, but we see that it was through one man that every nation was created.
Acts 17:26-27 (NIV)
26 From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. 27 God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.
All mankind is related through Noah and Adam – not through Satan.
