What does it mean to be a sluggard?

Someone recently asked me what it means to be guilty of being a sluggard.

To be slothful is to be a sluggard, lazy, unwilling to work.

Compare Proverbs 21:25 from the
King James Version (KJV)

25The desire of the slothful killeth him; for his hands refuse to labour.

and the New American Standard Bible (NASB)

25 The desire of the sluggard puts him to death,
For his hands refuse to work;

And of course, we see in scripture that everyone should work:

2 Thessalonians 3:10-12

10 For even when we were with you, we used to give you this order: if anyone is not willing to work, then he is not to eat, either. 11 For we hear that some among you are leading an undisciplined life, doing no work at all, but acting like busybodies. 12 Now such persons we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to work in quiet fashion and eat their own bread.

Even women are to work – at least at home:
Titus 2:3-5

3 Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good, 4 so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored.

So, to be a sluggard is to be lazy and unwilling to work. This is against what God has said for us to do. We are to be workers and earn our way in this life if we can.
