How shall we live?

The word of God is clear: anyone claiming to follow Christ MUST live a life that is holy, separated for God, not full of sinfulness.

1 Thessalonians 4:7

For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.

Ephesians 5:3

But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people.

2 Timothy 2:19

Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.”

2 Timothy 2:22

Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

Hebrews 12:14

Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.

1 Peter 1:15-16

But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

Jude 1:20

But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit.

The latter verse tell us how we are to strive – with the strength and guidance of the Holy Spirit. If we attempt to do it all ourselves, we are trying to do something in our own strength. In so doing, we are yet again putting ourselves in the place of God in our lives. We need to rely upon God, in the person of Holy Spirit and in the word He has given us, to guide us, to strengthen us, to help us, to become who God wants us to be.

Perhaps the best passage concerning this is found in Ephesians.

Ephesians 6:10-18

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.
