Young adults leave the church in droves!

There is an issue that has REALLY been bothering me. I’ve written on it 4 different times so far. I am concerned that the church is losing its children and youth. Anywhere from 75-88% of young adults will leave the church before they finish the first year in college.

A great sermon on this was given by Voddie Baucham.

We are losing the family. We are losing the youth. We are losing the young adults. We are failing to grow as a church organically. We are actually losing our children! Our children are going to hell! What we are doing about it? We’re turning our kids over to churches which have been PROVEN to fail in evangelizing and discipling our children! CRAZINESS!

Churches seem to have fallen into the idea that we must entertain people. The problem is NOT entertainment in the church; the PROBLEM is a lack of Biblical training, a lack of evangelism, and a lack of discipleship.

We are failing because we are not discipling our parents to evangelize and disciple their children. We are teaching people that its the church’s job to evangelize and teach their children, and that the parents are ill equipped to do so – and that is unbiblical! We are to train our children in the fear and admonition of the Lord.

Deuteronomy 4:9-10

9 Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them. 10 Remember the day you stood before the LORD your God at Horeb, when he said to me, “Assemble the people before me to hear my words so that they may learn to revere me as long as they live in the land and may teach them to their children.”

The Lord said children are to honor their parents because GOD has commanded it. But how can this happen if the children do not learn it?

Deuteronomy 5:16

16 “Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the LORD your God is giving you.

We are to Love God and serve Him with all our heart and soul, and we are to teach this to our children.

Deuteronomy 11:13-25

13 So if you faithfully obey the commands I am giving you today—to love the LORD your God and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul- 14 then I will send rain on your land in its season, both autumn and spring rains, so that you may gather in your grain, new wine and oil. 15 I will provide grass in the fields for your cattle, and you will eat and be satisfied.

16 Be careful, or you will be enticed to turn away and worship other gods and bow down to them. 17 Then the LORD’s anger will burn against you, and he will shut the heavens so that it will not rain and the ground will yield no produce, and you will soon perish from the good land the LORD is giving you. 18 Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 19 Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 20 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates, 21 so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land that the LORD swore to give your forefathers, as many as the days that the heavens are above the earth.

22 If you carefully observe all these commands I am giving you to follow—to love the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways and to hold fast to him- 23 then the LORD will drive out all these nations before you, and you will dispossess nations larger and stronger than you. 24 Every place where you set your foot will be yours: Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the Euphrates River to the western sea. 25 No man will be able to stand against you. The LORD your God, as he promised you, will put the terror and fear of you on the whole land, wherever you go.

Deuteronomy 31:9-13

9 So Moses wrote down this law and gave it to the priests, the sons of Levi, who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and to all the elders of Israel. 10 Then Moses commanded them: “At the end of every seven years, in the year for canceling debts, during the Feast of Tabernacles, 11 when all Israel comes to appear before the LORD your God at the place he will choose, you shall read this law before them in their hearing. 12 Assemble the people—men, women and children, and the aliens living in your towns—so they can listen and learn to fear the LORD your God and follow carefully all the words of this law. 13 Their children, who do not know this law, must hear it and learn to fear the LORD your God as long as you live in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.

Psalm 78:5

He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel, which he commanded our forefathers to teach their children

Ephesians 6:1-4

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— “that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” 4 Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

It is the PARENTS‘ job to disciple their own children, particularly the FATHER’S job – it is NOT the job of the church. It is not the job of the pastor. It is NOT the job of the youth pastor or youth leader. if you are a parent, DISCIPLING YOUR CHILDREN IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY! Do something about it!

If you are a church leader or even a member of a church, you need to push your church to change their ministry focus from entertaining children and youth to discipling the adults to evangelize and disciple their children.
