God said to not have multiple spouses

There are folks who want to try to claim that its ok to have multiple spouses, since the Bible condones it.

But the fact is, the Bible mentions polygamy, but does not condone it. In fact, rather than condone polygamy, God has said to not do it.

God tells us that man needs a helper so he will not be alone. God only created one woman to be the helper of Adam, not two, or three, or any other number – only one. One woman for one man.

Genesis 2:18-24

18 The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” 19 Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found. 21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. 23 The man said,  “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh;  she shall be called ‘woman,’  for she was taken out of man.” 24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh

We see in Genesis 4:19 the first mention of polygamy – by a descendant of Cain (you know, the guy who murdered his brother, Abel).

19 Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah.

But God tells us again with Noah how it should be in Genesis 7:7, where we see Noah had one wife.:

And Noah and his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives entered the ark to escape the waters of the flood.

Verse 13 tells us who was there:

13 On that very day Noah and his sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth, together with his wife and the wives of his three sons, entered the ark.

We know that there were 4 men and 4 women by reading the above, combined with what God said in 1 Peter 4:30,

who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water

Eight people – Noah and his wife, Shem (his son) and his wife, Ham (his son) and his wife, followed by Japheth (his son) and his wife.

In fact, we are told to not have multiple spouses and why in Deuteronomy 17:17,

17 He must not take many wives, or his heart will be led astray. He must not accumulate large amounts of silver and gold.

We see in 1 Kings 11:4 that is exactly what happened:

4 As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was not fully devoted to the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father had been.

Just as God told us in the Old Testament how it should be, we can see the same thing in the New Testament.

When discussing whether divorce is acceptable to God, Jesus said marriage is to be between a man and his wife.

Matthew 19:4-6

“Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.”

Mark 10:5-9

“It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law,” Jesus replied. “But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’ ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.”

1 Corinthians 7:2

But since there is so much immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman her own husband.

EACH man should have his OWN wife (one to one ratio). EACH woman should have her OWN husband (again, one to one ratio). Marriage is intended to be one man with one woman.

So, no. Polygamy is not something we should do. We should be self-controlled. And limit ourselves to one spouse, as we see in 1 Corinthians 7:2.
