Why are last rites needed?

I wonder why the Roman Catholic Church believes that last rites are needed.

We are each responsible for our own sins (Deuteronomy 24:16; Jeremiah 31:30; Jude 1:15; Revelation 20:12-13).

We get eternal life based upon faith in Christ (John 3:16). We are considered righteous by God when we come to faith (Romans 3:22, 4:5), justified and sanctified by faith (Galatians 3:24; Acts 26:17-18), with our sins forgiven when we believe in Christ as our Savior (Acts 10:43; Ephesians 1:7).

Given that when we come to faith in Christ as our Savior, we are redeemed, all our sins are forgiven, we are justified, declared righteous, sanctified, what use would a last rite have?
