Isn’t it arrogant and intolerant to say only Christians have the one true way to heaven?

One argument against Christ being the only way to heaven goes:

How can Christians claim they have the only true way to heaven? Isn’t that being arrogant and intolerant?

John 14:6 says, “Jesus answered him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one goes to the Father except by me.” This is the primary verse on which Christians rely to express the concept that Christ is the only way. Since a Christian is to accept the Bible as perfect, a Christian should accept this claim. That it sounds arrogant and intolerant is understandable, but inaccurate.

First of all, I think it is arrogant of an individual to think he can decide his own fate. Knowing truth and defining it are entirely different.

Second, tolerance has been reconstructed by postmodern society to have a derogative meaning. Intolerance used to mean discernment of that which is unacceptable. Today it means deciding that someone is unacceptable. The truths in the Bible explain behavior that God finds unacceptable. Because of the misrepresentation of Christ by many legalistic Christians the general public doesn’t understand that there is differentiation between the action and the person. God may hate the action, but He surely loves the person. So much so that He came to earth to die for the people.

The fact that Christ is the only true way is supported substantially by empirical and presuppositional evidence. The claim of absolute truth can be supported to great lengths. The argument of arrogance falls short when you think of the arrogance presented in the idea that any individual can define truth.
