What is the gospel?

So many times we hear people ask, “Are you saved?”, “Do you want to say a prayer to receive Jesus in your heart?”, “Do you know the gospel?”.

Is the gospel about asking Jesus to be your friend? Is the gospel simply talking to Jesus? Is it simply believing God exists? What IS the gospel? Does it matter?

If people are trying to from point A to point B, they must know the way to get there. So, if we are telling people how to get from point A to point B, we must be explicit and detailed and correct in what we say, otherwise people might get (or stay) lost. So, if you look at a mapping program or website and give it your current address and the address to which you are traveling, it will show you step by step what is needed for you to drive from A to B. Of course, it will leave out some steps, such as getting into your car and starting it, because it is assumed you know to do that. But if you have never seen a car, nor know how to drive one, the instructions would have to take those things into account.

Galatians tells us that if someone does not teach the gospel as presented by Paul is cursed.

So euaggelizo means to bring good news and euaggelion is good news.

But just what IS this good news? The easy answer is that God the Father sent His Son (Jn 3:16-18). But a fuller answer is:

We must believe God exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him (Hebrews 11:6). God is one (Dt 6:4). God the Father sent His Son (Jn 3:16-18) to suffer and die for our sins (1 Cor 15:3), so those who believe can have eternal life (Jn 3:16), because of repentance and forgiveness of sins through Christ Jesus (Acts 2:38; Acts 5:31).  God reconciled us to Himself through Christ (2 Cor 5:18), making peace between God and man through Christ’s blood shed on the cross (Colossians 1:20).  God raised up Christ on the third day and made Him visible (Acts 10:43). And part of the good news is that the Holy Spirit is God (Acts 5:1-4), and He seals us until the day of redemption (Eph 4:30). According to Paul, we must repent, turn to God (through faith in Christ) and this will cause us to have deeds appropriate to repentance (Acts 26:20).

In short, we must believe God exists and sent His Son to suffer and die for our sins, and if we have faith in God and in what God has done for us and will do for us, we are and will be saved.

  1. Great post, Wb.

On a side not, I’ve read somewhere that the Greek word for Gospel was used by the military of Rome to announce victory. Wish I could find verification of that (I hate when authors say something and don’t back things up.). Anyway, great post.

  2. Excellent. Thanks, Wb. I think the use of this word plays significantly in Mark’s Gospel when Mark’s Gospel is portrayed against the Roman Emperor who never could get that Good News.
