Last time I wrote on answering God’s call.

We are called to be Holy.

Ephesians 1:4-5

4For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will

We are called to love God and love others.

Matthew 22:36-39

36“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37Jesus replied: ” ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38This is the first and greatest commandment. 39And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.

Mark 12:28-31

28One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”

29“The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.[a] 30Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’[b] 31The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[c]There is no commandment greater than these.”

We are called to be workers for God.

Matthew 9:37-38

Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

Luke 10:2

He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.

Sometimes that call to be a worker for God is to be a mom or a dad or a wife or husband. Sometimes that call is to play music or talk about God. Sometimes that call is preaching or teaching or evangelizing. In all cases, God puts us where HE wants us so that we might find Him (and along the way help others find Him).

Acts 17:26-27

26From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. 27God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.

But we must realize that some of us are actually to GO somewhere and talk about God (and there’s a multitude of ways of going).

Romans 10:8-15

8But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: 9That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. 11As the Scripture says, “Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame.” 12For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

14How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”

Sometimes we are called to a place we used to live to minister to others there, to talk about God there. In fact, the first person I ever discipled for any length of time moved from where we lived in Miami to Chicago six years ago to evangelize and disciple her friends there. Now, she is preparing to return home to evangelize and disciple there.

Colossians 4:7-9

7Tychicus will tell you all the news about me. He is a dear brother, a faithful minister and fellow servant in the Lord. 8I am sending him to you for the express purpose that you may know about our circumstances and that he may encourage your hearts. 9He is coming with Onesimus, our faithful and dear brother, who is one of you. They will tell you everything that is happening here.

Philemon 1:10-13

10I appeal to you for my son Onesimus, who became my son while I was in chains. 11Formerly he was useless to you, but now he has become useful both to you and to me.

12I am sending him—who is my very heart—back to you. 13I would have liked to keep him with me so that he could take your place in helping me while I am in chains for the gospel.

But regardless of whether we’re to stay home or to move to live elsewhere or to go for a time to talk about God, we are called by GOD to do so – not by men.

Galatians 1:1

Paul, an apostle—sent not from men nor by man, but by Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead

As such, remember that God will provide for you. Trust God. If God is calling you to leave where you live right now, to go somewhere anre minister in some way, then answer the call. If God is calling you to minister in your home, or your work, or your town, answer the call. He will clear the path and make it possible, if it is indeed God’s call for you.

I have no experience with any of these groups. But here are some links that might help you:

Tent Maker missions:

Short term missions:

Answer the call God has placed on your life. If that is being a janitor, then be that. If your call is to be a parent, then be that. If your call is to be a doctor, or a lawyer, or a computer programmer, or a cook, or a musician, or a pastor, or a teacher, or a child care worker, or whatever – be what GOD has called you to be. Answer God’s call.

  1. Good links, Wb. As part of the theological education at United, I’ll have to go on a 10 day mission trip… looking forward to it. We’ve thought about doing short term mission trips, as a vacation, and once the youngest gets older, maybe so.
