God did it all – Do you live like it?

Colossians 1:9-14

9 For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. 10 And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, 11being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. 13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

  1. Introduction – Believers are to grow in their spiritual life through discipleship.
  2. We are to be filled with the knowledge of the will of God through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. (v9)
    1. NOT wisdom of the world: 1 Cor. 1:20 Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?.
    2. NOT the APPEARANCE of wisdom: Col. 2:23 regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom.
    3. DIVINE wisdom
      1. Beginning of wisdom is fear of the Lord: Prov. 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
  3. We are to fulfill the calling of all Christians: Acts 26:20 repent and turn to God and prove their repentance by their deeds.
    1. Live a life worthy of the Lord (v10) – God merits you living a certain way
    2. Please God in every way (v10).
      1. Bearing fruit in every good work (v10) – Jn 15:16 Jesus: I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit–fruit that will last.
      2. Growing in the knowledge of God (v10) – Rom. 12:2 be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
      3. Being strengthened with all power according to HIS glorious might (v11): Eph. 1:19-20 (raised Christ).
        1. Endurance (v11): 1 Tim 6:11 pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.
        2. Patience (v11): Gal. 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
      4. Joyously giving thanks to the Father (v12): I Thes. 5:18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will.
  4. We have been forgiven for our sins.
    1. God qualifiED us (v12): Mt 19:29, Acts 26:18.
    2. God rescuED us (v13): Acts 26:18 turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.
    3. God redeemED us (v14): Rom 3:23-24 justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.
  5. Conclusion – God did it all. God qualified us. God rescued us. God redeemed us. Do you live like it? If you love Christ Jesus and have Him as the one who is in charge of your life, ARE YOU LIVING IN A MANNER WORTHY OF THE LORD? Are you growing in knowledge of the will of God? Are you pleasing God in every way? If not, why not? What is it that prevents you from pleasing the Lord? I challenge you to commit, right now, to Love Christ and Live for Him – give Him access and dominion over EVERY part of you – your body, mind, and soul – and your life – home, marriage, family, work, and ministry.
