Trustworthy Statement

Paul laid out a number of statements which he called trustworthy sayings. Let’s look at the first one:

1 Timothy 1:15

15It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost of all.

Paul said that this statement is deserving of full acceptance. Its something that can be fully accepted and can be accepted by all. To accept it is to receive it. And just what is it we are to accept?

“Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.”

What does this mean?

Matthew 1:18-25

18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. 19 And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly.

20But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”

22 Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: 23″BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL,” which translated means, “GOD WITH US.”

24 And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, 25 but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus.

So we see that a virgin was found to be pregnant by the Holy Spirit. He was to be called Jesus because He would save His people from their sins. Indeed, He would be called “God with us.”

So what does that mean for us?

John 3:16-18

16“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.17 For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. 18 He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

It means God loves us so much that He sent His Son so that WHOEVER believes in Him can have eternal life. God did this so that the would might be saved through Him. But those who do NOT believe have been judged already.

God sent  Christ Jesus to save sinners. He did not come for perfect people. He came for the imperfect. He came for you and for me. He came to save us from our sins. Why would we need saving?

Romans 3:23

23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Because we ALL HAVE SINNED! but just as importantly, we EARN death because of our sins.

Romans 6:23

23For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

But we are gifted with eternal life. All we have to do is believe. And this gift is available to ALL:

Acts 16:31

They said, ” Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

Realize that a household in those days would include husband, wife, children, servants, and even slaves. So this salvation is available to everyone who believe. This is not saying that if someone believes then the entire household of that person would be saved.  No, this is saying that gift of salvation is available to everyone, regardless of status, gender, age, free or slave, or nationality. Christ did not come just to save men, nor just women, nor just children, nor … well, you get the idea. Christ came to save the world. But there is a catch – you must believe to receive this salvation. If you believe, then you will be saved, you will receive eternal life. If you do not….

Revelation 21:5-8

5 And He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new ” And He said, “Write, for these words are faithful and true.” 6 Then He said to me, “It is done I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life without cost. 7 He who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son. 8 But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”

Those who do not believe will be sent into the lake of fire, the second death.

2 Thessalonians 1:6-10

6 For after all it is only just for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you, 7and to give relief to you who are afflicted and to us as well when the Lord Jesus will be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, 8 dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, 10 when He comes to be glorified in His saints on that day, and to be marveled at among all who have believed–for our testimony to you was believed.

Those who do not believe will face eternal destruction in the lake of fire, away from the presence of God.

But this all started with the trustworthy statement: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.”

So, are you willing to admit you are a sinner? Are you willing to accept what God has done for you, sending His Son to be born Christ Jesus to save you? Will you change and turn to God? Are you willing to believe?

If not…. are you ready to face the other option?
