Trustworthy Statement #4

Paul wrote five trustworthy statements. Today we will look at the fourth one.

2 Timothy 2:10-13

10 For this reason I endure all things for the sake of those who are chosen, so that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus and with it eternal glory.

11 It is a trustworthy statement:
For if we died with Him, we will also live with Him;
12 If we endure, we will also reign with Him;
If we deny Him, He also will deny us;
13If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.

What does “if we died with Him, we will also live with Him” mean? It means that when we believe in Christ, we are baptized into the death that Christ died for us. Paul wrote the same thing in the book of Romans.

Romans 6:2-13

2May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? 3Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death4Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life5For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; 7for he who has died is freed from sin. 8Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, 9knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him. 10For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God11Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts, 13and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.

So then, Christ died once for all. Those who believe in Him are baptized into His death. And in the same way we were united with Christ in His death, we are united with Him in his resurrection. We died with Christ symbolically. But we are raised with Him in the same way. We have eternal life if we believe what Christ did for us.

“If we endure, we will also reign with Him.” This is speaking to the fact that people must believe in Christ and continue to do so until they die. If they do not have enduring faith, then it is not saving faith.

Hebrews 10:36

You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.

James 1:12

Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.

“If we deny Him, He also will deny us” means exactly what it states. If we do not continue in faith, if we deny Christ, He will deny us.

Matthew 7:22-23

22“Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ 23“And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.’

“If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.” This is saying that God will respond as He has said He would. If we are faithless, God will be consistent and do what He has said. If on the other hand we are faithful, God will be consistent and do what He has said. This idea is consistent with what we find in Deuteronomy 28. We will look in particular at verses 1-2 and 15.

1 If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. 2All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the LORD your God:

15 However, if you do not obey the LORD your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come on you and overtake you:

The idea is that certain things occur if you believe and obey and other things happen if you do not. Either way, God will be faithful to Himself, consistent to His character. If we believe, we have eternal life. If we do not, the wrath of God remains upon us.

John 3:16-18

16“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. 17“For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. 18“He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

People can claim they know God, but deny Him with their actions.

Titus 1:15-16

15 To the pure, all things are pure; but to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their mind and their conscience are defiled. 16 They profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny Him, being detestable and disobedient and worthless for any good deed.

Indeed, there are some people who have a form of godliness, but have denied its power. We are to avoid people like that.

2 Timothy 3:2-5

2For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, 4 treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these.

We can trust in what God has done and will do, based upon the fact that we can trust God. If we persistent in believe, we have eternal life. If we deny Christ, we will be denied.  Either way, God will be consistent to His character. Those who seek God’s righteousness will be blessed. Those who seek their own will suffer for it.
