The Alien, widow, and fatherless

I was looking at what the Bible has to say about those who are foreigners to this nation. Now, obviously, theses verses were written to the nation of Israel, who had a theocracy. But none the less, these principles still apply to us today.

Exodus 12:49 NIV

The same law applies to the native-born and to the alien living among you.”

Exodus 22:21 NIV

“Do not mistreat an alien or oppress him, for you were aliens in Egypt.

Numbers 15:16

‘There is to be one law and one ordinance for you and for the alien who sojourns with you.’

Leviticus 19:33-34 NIV

When an alien lives with you in your land, do not mistreat him. The alien living with you must be treated as one of your native-born. Love him as yourself, for you were aliens in Egypt. I am the LORD your God.

Leviticus 24:22 NIV

You are to have the same law for the alien and the native-born. I am the LORD your God.’ “

Leviticus 25:35 NIV

” ‘If one of your countrymen becomes poor and is unable to support himself among you, help him as you would an alien or a temporary resident, so he can continue to live among you.

Deuteronomy 10:19 NAS

“So show your love for the alien, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt.

Deuteronomy 24:17 NAS

“You shall not pervert the justice due an alien or an orphan, nor take a widow’s garment in pledge.

Deuteronomy 26:12 NIV

When you have finished setting aside a tenth of all your produce in the third year, the year of the tithe, you shall give it to the Levite, the alien, the fatherless and the widow, so that they may eat in your towns and be satisfied.

Deuteronomy 27:19 NAS

‘Cursed is he who distorts the justice due an alien, orphan, and widow.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

Deuteronomy 31:12 NAS

“Assemble the people, the men and the women and children and the alien who is in your town, so that they may hear and learn and fear the LORD your God, and be careful to observe all the words of this law.

Psalm 146:9 NIV

The LORD watches over the alien and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked.

Zechariah 7:10 NIV

Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the alien or the poor. In your hearts do not think evil of each other.’

Basically, it boils down to: be nice, treat aliens as you would the widow or the fatherless; have the same laws for the alien and the national; treat everyone justly. Can this be said of your own behavior? Can it be said of this nation?

Use scripture to evaluate what we should do in life, even in dealing with undocumented aliens, documented aliens, and the native.
