lying is wrong

I was commenting to a child that all liars go to hell and the Bible doesn’t mention any exceptions that I could see, when another child said, “Don’t you HAVE to lie? I mean, we dont want to hurt people’s feelings, right?” He proceeded to tell me how his mom teaches that he is not to be mean and not hurt people’s feelings.

But let us look at what the Bible teaches us. We see in Revelation 21:8,

But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”

The idea that we sometimes have to lie often comes the idea that we should not hurt people’s feelings – we want to be kind. Do not understand me, scripture tells us we are to be loving.

Ephesians 4:2

2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.

In fact, scripture tells us to be kind.

Colossians 3:12

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

But given that scripture tells us all liars go to hell, we must put those verses together and find ways of being kind without being liars. So we have to be honest and yet we need to kind – this calls for tact. We need to find ways to tell the truth kindly, in love.

  1. We should pray first before we answer. Sometimes situations arise and we don’t have time to pray but if we start out our day or end our day with prayer about how to answer man in whatever situation we may encounter then God will give us an answer when we are called upon to give an answer.

    Proverbs 16: 1-3

1 The preparations of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue, is from the LORD.

2 All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits.

3 Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.
