Acts 8

Day 8, Acts 8

Paul ravaged the church. God used a young man to force the early church members to scatter. In the process, some were beaten, abused, or killed. But also in the process, God’s word was shared. Sick were healed. Paralyzed were made to walk. People were delivered from the evil unclean siprits that tortured them.

Why do we not hear of unclean spirits today? Why is it that people have been blinded to the fact of their spiritual condition? Satan doesnt want us to believe we need God, nor does he want us to believe that the Spirit of GOD will heal and drive out demons.

Was simon the magician saved? Scripture says he believed, but the Holy Spirit had not come upon any of them. They had been baptized in the name of the Lord, but Jesus, but had not receiveed the Holy Spirit. Does this describe much of the church today? They have beelieved, they have been baptized in the name of the Lord, but the Holy Spirit has not come uon them…. Should it?

Back to Simon, when he saw the power that the apostles had to lay hands on someone and they wold received the Holy Spirit, he wanted that power, and tried to buy it. Check out Peter’s response:

20 But Peter said to him, “May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money! 21 You have no part or portion in this matter, for your heart is not right before God. 22 Therefore repent of this wickedness of yours, and pray the Lord that, if possible, the intention of your heart may be forgiven you. 23 For I see that you are in the gall of bitterness and in the bondage of iniquity.”

The word translated as “matter” is actually the Greek “Logos”, meaning “word”. This is the same word used to describe Jesus in John 1:1. So Simon had no part in this “LOGOS”, this WORD. Did he mean Simon had no part in this Jesus?

Peter said Simon was in the BONDAGE of iniquity. He had not been set free, as Christ had said He would do. So is this an example of someone who claimed belief, but was not saved?

And finally we see the Ethiopian eunuch coming to faith. This is a high ranking black man who was eunuch – was he that way because of having been physically changed or because he was not attracted to women? Scripture doesnt tell us. But God is not condemning of his race or color or gender or ranking or social status, or job or the fact that he was a eunuch. He needed Christ. God ensured he received what he needed so he could believe. When he believed, he was baptized – IMMEDIATELY. There is some question about whether verse 37 is in the original:

37 [And Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”]

But none the less, it is what is needed to be saved – true belief in Christ that affects you to do something about it, live a life which shows your faith by what you do. Its not the doing of things that makes us saved, but if we are saved, it wil flow out of us in what we do.

When he was baptized, God took Phillip away. And as Phillip went, he proclaimed the gospel. This is what every believer needs to do – proclaim the gospel of Christ as we go.
