Does salvation depend on you believing or on God regenerating?

So many believe that God can not save them apart from them choosing to believe. But what does scripture say?

Ezekiel 36:26-27

26 Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances.

We know from scripture that being justified is a gift from God by His grace.

Romans 3:24

24 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus;

We know that Jesus is the author and perfect of our faith.

Hebrews 12:2

2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

You have to be granted the aibilty to repent.

2 Timothy 2:25

25 with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth

You actually have to be granted the ability to believe.

Philippians 1:29

29 For to you it has been granted for Christ’s sake, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake,

People are born spiritually NOT because they want to, but because GOD wants them to be saved.

John 1:13

13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

So, faith is from God. The ability to repent is from God. The ability to believe is from God.

And it happened when you were dead in your sins.

Ephesians 2:5

5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),

Colossians 2:13

13 When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions,

No one can even say that Jesus is Lord the H0ly Spirit makes it possible for them.

1 Corinthians 12:3

3 Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus is accursed”; and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.

So then, when one reads the descrtiption of a Christian in 1 John 5:1, we are not reading the prerequisite of being a Christian, but the signs that one is chosen by God and regenerated by God.

1 John 5:1

5 Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and whoever loves the Father loves the child born of Him.

God chose us – not because we would choose God, but because He had His own purpose and grace.

2 Timothy 1:9

9 who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was granted us in Christ Jesus from all eternity

Romans 9:16

16 So then it does not depend on the man who wills or the man who runs, but on God who has mercy.

It does not depend upon us. It depends on GOD giving us the faith, grace, ability to repent, ability to believe…
