Want evidence that you are saved?

I can’t tell you the number of times people have told me they are Christians and then told me they live lives which are contrary to being God’s person. Yeah, I get that many of you will throw up the don’t judge me proof-text, ignoring that Christ was saying dont be a hypocrite (see these posts about whether Christians’ should judge: judging sin, hypocrisy, and holiness, Should Christians Judge?, Does Jesus like people who judge?, Is it necessary to point out sin?). But we need to look to the whole of scripture. John told us how to know we are God’s.

Do you love God and others?

1 John 4:20-21

20 If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for the one who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen. 21 And this commandment we have from Him, that the one who loves God should love his brother also.

Do you obey God’s commands, ie, dont be sexually immoral, dont be drunk (I think high would also be included), don’t steal, don’t lie, etc….

1 John 5:1-4

1 Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and whoever loves the Father loves the child born of Him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and observe His commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome. 4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.

Now a strict legalist would say one can’t sin and be God’s. I’m not saying that. We will ALL sin (Romans 3:23). None of us are perfect. But we can not live a pattern of sin, ignoring what we know God has SAID. We MUST repent and turn to God. Godly sorrow brings repentance.

2 Corinthians 7:10

For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death.

Have you been granted repentance?

2 Timothy 2:25

with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth

Are you living a life of submission to God and reptance from sin towards God?

James 4:7

Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

Romans 12:1

Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.
Is your behavior holy?
1 Peter 1:15
but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior;
Have you escaped the corruption of the world?
2 Peter 2:18-21

18 For they mouth empty, boastful words and, by appealing to the lustful desires of the flesh, they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error. 19 They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity—for “people are slaves to whatever has mastered them.” 20 If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning. 21 It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them.

Do you imitate evil? Do you do what is evil?

3 John 1:11

Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good. Anyone who does what is good is from God. Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God.
Its not by doing good things that we are saved. No, we are saved by grace through faith.
Ephesians 2:8

For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;
But we are to do good works, which were prepared for us in advance.
Ephesians 2:10

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

So how do you know you are saved? What is the evidence that you are saved?

If you are saved:

  1. You have faith in Christ as your Lord and Savior.
  2. You obey God.
  3. You love God.
  4. You love others (and not just with your lips).
  5. You live holy lives.
  6. You do good and avoid evil and sin.

Now, its likely that this side of heven, we will do none of these things perfectly. But we SHOULD be doing them, and be ever increasing in our imitation of Paul, who imitated Christ. Christ is our role model and we should model our lives after Him.

Does YOUR life look sacrificial? Is your love for God evident in your daily lives? Does it show in how you think and how you treat people? Does it show in the music you listen to? Does it show in the movies, television, shows, and plays that you watch?

If its not evident by looking at you, then perhaps you need to review whether you have faith at all – or is it just an idea? Its easy to have an idea that God exists, that Christ is the son of God and was sent to suffer and die for our sins. James said that even the demons believe and shudder (James 2:14-19). But have we the faith that changes our lives? That’s what Paul said, we need to change, turn to God and have deeds which demonstrate our changed hearts (Acts 26:20).

Your faith should be seen in your life. Otherwise… is it faith?

  1. I do agree with much of what you said in the above comment, but others, especially idealist young people, would probably be more favorably impressed if someone had checked your spelling before publication.

I wish you would also explain Romans 2:10-13 which are very insightful verses.

    • Thanks for the heads up on the spelling.

As for Romans 2:10-13, I am still tired of your insistence that we MUST follow the Law.

But let’s not limit ourselves to just the verses you asked about – incude the rest of the passage.

      Romans 2:10-16

10 but glory and honor and peace to everyone who does good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 11 For there is no partiality with God.

12 For all who have sinned without the Law will also perish without the Law, and all who have sinned under the Law will be judged by the Law; 13 for it is not the hearers of the Law who are just before God, but the doers of the Law will be justified. 14 For when Gentiles who do not have the Law do instinctively the things of the Law, these, not having the Law, are a law to themselves, 15 in that they show the work of the Law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them, 16 on the day when, according to my gospel, God will judge the secrets of men through Christ Jesus.

Sinning happens – regardless of whether you have been given the Law or not. The ones who were given the Law are the Jews. Those who were not are the Gentiles. When people do what GOD wants without having the Law, then they give evidence that the Law has been written on their hearts. This is evidence of a new heart – which is what was promised:

      Ezekiel 11:19

And I will give them one heart, and put a new spirit within them. And I will take the heart of stone out of their flesh and give them a heart of flesh

      Ezekiel 36:26

Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh

      Jeremiah 31:33

“But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the Lord, “I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.

      Hebrews 10:15-17

15 And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us; for after saying, 16 “This is the covenant that I will make with them After those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws upon their heart, And on their mind I will write them,”
He then says, 17 “And their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”

GOD writes HIS Law on our hearts and convicts us to live as HE wants. Its not a list of things we are to accomplish, but a love we have for God.

If we change, turn to God, and have deeds which give evidence to that change, then we are doing as God wants.

      Acts 26:20

20 but kept declaring both to those of Damascus first, and also at Jerusalem and then throughout all the region of Judea, and even to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, performing deeds appropriate to repentance.

Before you try to say yet again that we must follow the Law, realize that Paul said we need to be convinced in our own minds.

      Romans 14:5-6

5 One person regards one day above another, another regards every day alike. Each person must be fully convinced in his own mind. 6 He who observes the day, observes it for the Lord, and he who eats, does so for the Lord, for he gives thanks to God; and he who eats not, for the Lord he does not eat, and gives thanks to God

Before you keep pushing people to follow the Law, do not put a stumbling block in front of people.

      Romans 14:13-15

13 Therefore let us not judge one another anymore, but rather determine this—not to put an obstacle or a stumbling block in a brother’s way. 14 I know and am convinced in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself; but to him who thinks anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean. 15 For if because of food your brother is hurt, you are no longer walking according to love. Do not destroy with your food him for whom Christ died.

Everything we do should be to engender love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.
      1 Timothy 1:5

But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.
