What you say is important

A lot of people say things without thinking – sometimes its pretty harsh, other times its pretty abusive. Cussing is common. But God says we should not let unwholesome speech come from our mouths, nor coarse jesting, filthiness, silly talk. We are to keep evil away from our mouth and not speak deceitfully.

Read what scripture says regarding your mouth:

Ephesians 4:29
29 Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.

Ephesians 5:4
4 and there must be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks.

Colossians 3:8
8 But now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth.

James 3:9-10
9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God; 10 from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way.

Romans 12:14
14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.

1 Peter 3:10
10 For, “The one who desires life, to love and see good days,
Must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit.

Matthew 12:36
“But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.”

Matthew 15:11
11 It is not what enters into the mouth that defiles the man, but what proceeds out of the mouth, this defiles the man.

James 1:26
26 If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man’s religion is worthless.

Proverbs 13:3
3 The one who guards his mouth preserves his life;
The one who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.

Psalm 141:3
3 Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips.
