God’s attributes can help us understand God’s love

God has many attributes, but there are some which are really helpful for those who have a hard time understanding God’s love.

God is love:

1 John 4:8

The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love.

God is gracious and compassionate:

Exodus 34:6

Then the Lord passed by in front of him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth;

God is a just God who will judge the sins committed against you:

Romans 12:19

Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.

God is wise and can help you handle any ongoing struggles

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

God is merciful in providing a way for you to be saved and to have a vital relationship with him:

Romans 5:8

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Realize that those who love God have no need to fear God’s punishment.

First those who believe in Christ as Lord and Savior have eternal life, and this will be shown in your life by a changed life where you have evidence of repentance.

John 3:14-18

14 As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; 15 so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life. 16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. 18 He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Acts 26:18-20

18 to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the dominion of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified by faith in Me.’ 19 “So, King Agrippa, I did not prove disobedient to the heavenly vision, 20 but kept declaring both to those of Damascus first, and also at Jerusalem and then throughout all the region of Judea, and even to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, performing deeds appropriate to repentance.

With love for God, we have no need to fear.

1 John 4:18

18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love.God’s love is perfected in those who keep His Word. We grow more mature and more perfect.

1 Corinthians 14:20

Brethren, do not be children in your thinking; yet in evil be infants, but in your thinking be mature.

1 John 2:5-6

5 but whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him: 6 the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked.
